Longtime president of the Santa Fe CL60 Association, John Shovlin, passed away on June 1, 2010.

Of Mt. Lebanon, PA, on June 1, 2010. Born June 19, 1927 in Midland, Pennsylvania, the son of John F. Shovlin, Jr. and Helene Perrier Shovlin. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Betty Radvak Shovlin, his son Michael (Sue) Shovlin and three grandsons, Kenneth, Kevin (Chasidy), Keith (Megan) Shovlin and his sister Mary Ann Ferlaino, along with many treasured nieces, nephews and their generations of children. He was preceded in death by his brother James. John is a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and Korea, serving from 1945-1954, active and reserve. He was aboard the USS Santa Fe CL 60 that served with distinction in the Pacific theater, 1942-1946. The ship earned 16 battle stars, presidential unit citation and Navy unit commendation. He also served on the USS Canberra CA 70 and USS Sitko Bay. For the last 20 years, John has served as the Chairman of the USS Santa Fe CL 60 Association that has held annual reunions since WWII. He considered this a great honor to be among such dedicated veterans. He also was Past Commander of American Legion Post 481 and Past District Deputy Commander of District 26, American Legion. Other memberships included VFW Post 8168, Midland, PA and 40/8 Voiture 739, Beaver County and former member of the Midland Lions Club. John retired from Crucible Division of Colt Industried after 36 years of service in the coke, iron and steel division, combustion engineering and instrumentation department. Following that he spent two years with IMS International as Assistant Superintendent establishing a steel plant in Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. He served as a School Director for 18 years in Midland Borough Schools as Chair of the Education and Athletic Committees, Treasurer, Vice President and President of the Board. He also was one of nine initial Directors for starting the Beaver County Community College. John is a member of St. Gregory Byzantine Catholic Church in Upper Saint Clair, PA. Friends welcome Thurs. 2-4 & 6-8PM at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SVC., 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp., where Parastas Service will be held Thurs. 3PM and Blessing Service Fri. 9:30AM. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Fri. 10:30AM at St. Gregory Byzantine Catholic Church. Memorial contributions may be made, if desired to Byzantine Catholic Seminary of Saints Cyril and Methodius, 3605 Perrysville Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15214-2297.
